Golden Retrievers are large, powerful dogs with long fur and an athletic build. And a working bred dog might look a little less like the postcard Goldie. You will probably find a show bred dog slightly less serious and a little less mature.
Their general appearance though is similar, and their temperaments again do not differ to a great degree. They also usually get on well with children and other animals. They are great watchdogs, but not guard dogs, making them a good fit as family pets. They are perfect pets for new dog owners, as well as prized show dogs, sporting companions and even disability assistants too. Over the last hundred years Golden Retrievers have become one of the most common dogs around, and with good reason. Becoming officially Golden Retrievers as late as 1920. These gorgeous dogs were bred and shown under the category of Flat Coated Retrievers until the early 1900’s, when they were given their own category. Wavy coated Retrievers and Setters also formed a part of their early breeding program. He was thought to have mated a yellow Flat Coated Retriever with the now sadly extinct Tweed Spaniel. This active, intelligent, working, hunting, therapy and companion dog comes in show and working bred types. The Golden Retriever dog breed is medium sized, fluffy, thick coated, floppy eared, big eyed and well tempered.
